How to Draw from Your Imagination

Learning how to draw from your imagination requires the same skills as drawing from observation plus two more:

how to draw from imagination 1. Being able to visualise: You don't have to be able to visualise perfectly, but the more clearly you can see in your mind what you want to put down on paper, the easier the task, whether it's a character, a scene or a mythical creature. Don't worry if your visualisation skills are a little rusty or unused - they will improve with practise.

2. A spirit of adventure: Being willing to start a drawing and see where it will take you is essential. Children have this ability but often we lose it as we grow up. We get too hung up on making finished pictures or too concerned to see the end of the journey before we've taken the first step. If you feel you've lost this willingness to not know the ending, remind yourself that not knowing what will happen is what life is all about.

How to draw from your imagination

There are two ways to approach this - which you choose depends on what you want from your drawing:
how to draw from imagination, unicorn 1. The instant results approach: I have prepared some step by step tutorials which show you how to draw, for example, angel wings and unicorns . If you just want to draw something specific this may be the approach for you. Or if you want a gentle introduction to the art of drawing from the imagination, you might enjoy these tutorials too.

2. The organic route : If you want to learn how to draw from your imagination in order to conjure worlds and scenarios of your own design, whatever they may be, this is the route for you. Here you'll learn how to get ideas, get them down on paper and develop them into finished pieces. This route is amorphous because it isn't set in stone - in fact it's not set at all, but there are a few signposts along the way which will help you as you learn to draw from your imagination.

To see the process that I use, please have a look at the step by step to creating Moving House.
